Anamorphoses of Memory

1986 Amsterdam, Netherlands
Coauthor: Dirk Groeneveld

Software: Gideon May

The curator of the exhibition Kunst Over de Vloer invited various artists to create installations inside the rooms of a private apartment building, the Entrepotdok, in Amsterdam.

Anamorphoses of Memory was located in a sparse, untidy student bedroom that the artists chose for this installation. A Sony CRT monitor sat facing upwards on the student’s mattress amid the used sheets and bedding. An anamorphic video of circles of text on the monitor screen reflected onto a mirror-surfaced cylinder that was standing in the centre of the screen. As the text radiated outwards over the monitor, the viewer could read the words as vertically scrolling sentences in their mirrored reflection on the cylinder. Dirk Groeneveld wrote this text especially for the artwork, and its narrative evoked imagined erotic contingencies concerning the student and this bed.
