Safeguarding the Community: An intangible Cultural Heritage New Media Exhibition
Cocurators: Jeffrey Shaw, Sarah Kenderdine, Hing Chao
Using a range of new media displays, this exhibition shows how classical martial arts from the Minnan region (southern Fujian) - one of the oldest martial arts traditions in South China - came into being during the Ming dynasty (1368—1644) in reaction to social violence; while Jiao Festivals, fire dragon, and unicorn dance illustrate, on the other hand, how ritual performances and ceremonies in southern China, including Hong Kong, originated as spiritual strategies to counter the invisible threats posed by diseases and famine.
