Waterquake
Production: Eventstructure Research Group, Amsterdam
Waterquake was an event structure and performance that took place in and around the main canal in Assen, in the Netherlands. Before visitors arrived, long lengths of polythene tubing had been systematically dropped into the bottom of the canal. The performance saw these tubes slowly inflated with air and smoke, making them gradually emerge from the water and stretch out over its surface. Once these tubes filled the canal they then rose up into the surrounding streets and trees. Spectators dragged and knotted the tubes into various forms, and holes punctured in the plastic because of enthusiastic handling released plumes of smoke.
