The opening of the MultiMediale 5 on 18 October 1997 coincided with the inauguration of the ZKM Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe.

Curated by Jeffrey Shaw, Current was showing on the second floor of the new ZKM building in an area belonging to the Institute for Visual Media and generally used for production activities. The visitor has the opportunity to experience both the atmosphere of the productive environment as well as the resultant works.
